According to a high-ranking party insider, senior MK Party officials are furious that Floyd Shivambu runs the party “through a cabal” from his EFF days and that the administration of the party has become lax under his tenure.
Zuma-Sambudla, a party MP and daughter of former president Jacob Zuma, shocked senior officials on Monday night by taking to social media and attacking Shivambu and his leadership style, saying: “Floyd is now taking us for a ride. He’s trying to bring his cabal of EFF people to run the party. At the recent workshop meeting in Cape Town, he was told in no uncertain times that this is unacceptable.”
He went on to say:
He is leading the party through factions, but his powers are undeniable. He ignores those with the ability to use force who created the party. There isn’t much job in the party for these individuals he invites in.
The official claims that Shivambu, with the backing of Magasela Mzobe, the head of the MK Party’s presidency, is mostly selecting leaders who were members of the EFF while he was a senior official there.
To the dismay of the rank and file, new members who were parachuted to positions, including former Public Protector Busisiwe Mkhwebane and Mzwanele Manyi, were referred to as “arrivalists” by EFF leaders and members.
“Duduzile is upset because of his encounter in Cape Town. She is correct, yet her public expression of a meeting sentiment is also incorrect. According to the source, she needs political maturity to understand that what is discussed in meetings does not become public knowledge.
According to the insider, the MK Party had devolved into a shadow of its former self under Shivambu.
“Programs that allowed you to observe the party in action are no longer available. According to the source, there are no financial records or human capital.
“He [Shivambu] keeps the money in his office and only uses it for political events when Jacob Zuma, the president of the MK Party, attends. Where have you witnessed a secretary-general acting like the president’s personal assistant? He takes that action in order to restrict access to the president. The president is run by him and Mzobe. Mzobe is a member of the entire EFF gang that I am referring about.
“We are a legitimate political organization; this is not the EFF. The EFF struggled in the elections because they are only found in higher education institutions and not in local communities. He is leading us in that direction and intends to carry out the precise actions that infuriated the EFF [the ‘arrivalists’].”
According to the source, most buildings’ rent has not been paid, and provinces lack constituency offices.
He was repeating what Mxolisi Mthethwa, the party’s eMalahleni zone coordinator in the abaQulusi sub-region in KwaZulu-Natal’s Zululand district, had said in a complaint to Zuma-Sambudla over Shivambu’s “behavior” and “performance as secretary-general.”
Additionally, Mthethwa criticized Shivambu for making choices about constituencies without first consulting local leaders.
He continued, “The secretary-general failed to communicate effectively with constituency staff members, members of the KZN provincial high command and the caucus office of the KZN province, which led to confusion, mistrust and disunity.”
Zuma-Sambudla should penalize Shivambu and potentially remove him from office, according to Mthethwa’s recommendation.
Zuma-Sambudla, meantime, issued a public apology for her offensive posts on X on Monday night that were directed at Shivambu.
Zuma-Sambudla issued an apology on Tuesday after her father, Jacob Zuma, the leader of the MKP, told her to do so or risk being kicked out of the party.
Her anti-Shivambu tweets, however, continued to appear on her feed.
The Parliamentary website said that Zuma-Sambudla’s office phone rang unanswered Tuesday morning, and she did not reply to an email.
An inquiry for comment from Shivambu was not answered.
Magasela Mzobe, the head of the MKP presidency, was asked for comment early Tuesday morning and responded, “Unfortunately, we won’t be commenting beyond the statement released by the president.”
The party’s most recent statement criticizing Zuma-Sambudla was tweeted by Mzobe, who spoke isiZulu on her behalf during her most recent court appearance in her treason prosecution. The caption read, “President Jacob Zuma speaks.”
On Monday night, Zuma-Sambudla wrote in one of the contentious posts: “Fuck you Floyd.”
