Exceptional Requirements

Purpose of the Job
In order to perform Zoo Assistant duties in a manner that is both efficient and effective within the Mitchell Park Zoo.
Principal Areas of Responsibility
Ensures that all of the necessary tools, materials, and equipment are gathered in preparation for the day’s work.
Provides care and feeding for livestock, as well as cleaning of enclosures, in accordance with the instructions given.
Performs a variety of zoological functions in general.
During the breeding season, we provide the necessary nesting boxes as well as the material and platforms that are required for breeding programs.
Helps with the process of capturing animals and facilitating their relocation.
Assists in the preparation of travel boxes for the relocated animals.
The Conservator provides instructions for minor surgical procedures such as pinioning and wing clipping, and the assistant assists with these procedures.
Assists in the execution of post mortem examinations that are performed in the premises.
Performs routine maintenance tasks such as repairing meshing fencing, clearing blockages, ensuring that pump intakes are free of obstructions to enclosures, and other similar tasks.
Assistance is provided in the process of redecorating and altering enclosures.
Provides assistance to members of the general public who have less significant concerns or questions regarding the zoo.

Requirements
Matric (National Qualifications Framework Level 4) or its equivalent.
Three months of experience working with animals in a zoo setting that is relevant to the position.
